Design Problem
The lack of communication
between the community &
LBPD has created a gap of
misunderstanding, which
feeds into a cycle of distrust
& stereotyping, that prevents
positive interactions from
happening between the two
groups.

RECRUITMENT

Inspiration
Mission
Why
Why
The Long Beach community is separated into districts. Often, people are not familiar
with communities outside their own, and see the police as “intruders” within their community.
Mission
To reimagine LBPD’s approach to promoting recruitment, while
creating and maintaining an authentic connection to the communities of Long Beach.
A Backyard Party Is...
A tradition in which families and friends congregate to enjoy their favorite food, games, drinks and more. A casual, relaxed environment to exchange conversation and appreciate each other’s company.
Who
Families in Long Beach
LBPD Officers
City Officials
Local Schools, Businesses and Organizations
What
A communal event showcasing the culture of the communities through spotlighting the local food, music and artists of the Long Beach. Offering the chance to foster dialogue and cultural exchange.
When
Four times a year, once in each of the districts of Long Beach - perhaps coinciding with the four seasons of the year as well.
Event Attractions
The five main themes for Backyard LB are 1) Local food, 2) Live music, 3) Arts & craft with local artists, 4) Team building activities with LBPD, and 5) Interactive installations.
Event Promotion
Long Beach community can learn about the event through 1) Print outputs - eg. Posters, 2) Digital outputs, 3) Interpersonal outputs
